Guidelines – Inuktut Language Plan

To support the implementation of the Inuktut Protection Act (IPA), we are providing the Inuktut Language Plan Guidelines.

This document provides clear direction to organizations, private sector bodies on:

  • their linguistic obligations under the IPA (public signage, commercial advertising, customer and client services, invoices, notices, and essential communications in Inuktut).
  • how to prepare an Inuktut Language Plan (ILP), a tool used to assess current practices and plan concrete measures to achieve compliance with the Act.
  • possible actions and measures, such as translating signage, offering staff language training, hiring interpreters, developing internal procedures, and increasing the visibility of Inuktut services.
  • the review and approval process carried out by the Office of the Languages Commissioner of Nunavut (OLCN).
  • the framework for accommodation under the IPA, available to private sector organizations that demonstrate significant challenges or undue hardship in meeting their obligations.

These guidelines also outline the role of the Languages Commissioner in reviewing, monitoring, and, when necessary, requiring revisions to submitted plans. They are therefore an essential compliance tool for all organizations providing services to the public in Nunavut.
