The Languages Commissioner’s core duties include:
- Informing Nunavummiut of their language rights
- Informing and advising territorial institutions, municipalities, private sector organizations and federal departments of their language obligations
- Monitoring language services and communications with the public
- Informing obligated bodies of their communication and service requirements under section 3 of the Inuktut Protection Act (IPA)
- Investigating or facilitating resolutions and recommending corrective actions
- Supporting and monitoring the implementation of Nunavut’s language legislation
The Commissioner also has broader functions, including:
- Promoting language rights by encouraging the use of official languages
- Reviewing the adequacy and effectiveness of language-rights legislation
- Producing and publishing reports
- Conducting research or studies that support the advancement of language rights in Nunavut
- Making recommendations to obligated bodies and providing advice to any person
