Accommodation Request

Under the Inuit Language Protection Act (ILPA), private sector organizations are required to provide services and communications in Inuktut. However, in specific circumstances, an accommodation may be requested.

The Accommodation Request Form is available for organizations that:

  • face undue hardship in immediately fulfilling certain obligations set out in the Act.
  • primarily serve a non-Inuit linguistic or cultural group.

The request must include:

  • a description of the organization and its activities.
  • the nature of the public it serves.
  • the obligations that cannot be immediately implemented and the reasons.
  • alternative measures proposed along with a realistic timeline.

All accommodation requests must be accompanied by an approved or updated Inuit Language Plan.

Once submitted to the Office of the Languages Commissioner of Nunavut, the request will be reviewed to determine whether accommodation may be granted and for what duration.
