Accommodation Request

Under the Inuktut Protection Act (IPA), private sector organizations are required to provide services and communications in Inuktut. However, in specific circumstances, an organization may request an accommodation.

The Accommodation Request Form is available for organizations that:

  • face undue hardship in immediately fulfilling certain obligations set out in the IPA or.
  • primarily serve a non-Inuit linguistic or cultural community.

A request for accommodation must include:

  • a description of the organization and its activities;
  • the nature of the public it serves;
  • the Inuktut obligations that cannot be immediately implemented and the reasons;
  • alternative measures proposed along with a realistic timeline;
  • evidence supporting the need for accommodation (e.g., operational, financial or structural constraints).

All accommodation requests must be submitted together with an approved or updated Inuktut Language Plan (ILP).

Once submitted to the Office of the Languages Commissioner of Nunavut (OLCN), the request will be reviewed to determine whether an accommodation may be granted and for what duration, in accordance with section 3(5) of the IPA.
