To support the implementation of the Inuit Language Protection Act (ILPA), we are providing the Inuit Language Plan Guidelines.
This document offers clear direction to organizations – including federal and territorial institutions, municipalities, and private sector bodies – on:
- their linguistic obligations under the ILPA (public signage, advertising, customer services, invoices, notices, and essential communications in Inuktut).
- how to prepare an Inuit Language Plan, a tool to assess current practices and plan concrete measures to achieve compliance.
- possible actions and measures (translating signage, providing staff language training, hiring interpreters, developing internal procedures, etc.).
- The review and approval process carried out by the Office of the Languages Commissioner of Nunavut.
- the framework for accommodation, which may be available to private sector organizations facing challenges in meeting their obligations.
These guidelines also outline the role of the Languages Commissioner in reviewing, monitoring, and, when necessary, requiring revisions to submitted plans. They are, therefore, an essential compliance tool for all organizations providing services to the public in Nunavut.
